Bob in the Afternoon

After discovering I had no real desire to become a biology teacher (which I thought would be my vocation when I entered college) and knowing farming wasn’t my niche, I set out to find myself by leaving Southern Minnesota and taking the Greyhound to Long Beach, CA for two years of exploration. No radio. Next, back to college…for 4 weeks. Two buddies of mine talked me into joining them for a European tour. Four months of that, having no more money, it was back to Minnesota where a girlfriend suggested I talk to a co-worker at KOLM Radio in Rochester about a career in radio. Off to Brown Institute in Minneapolis where I trained and learned radio was an unexpected passion. After Colleen & I married, it was off to my first gig: two years as a morning man in Manistique in Michigan’s Upper Penninsula. Then down to Battle Creek for another announcer’s job. It was there that I got the opportunity to become a Program Director at a giant Country Music station in Eau Claire, Wisconsin…WAXX.

I spent 17 years at WAXX, progressing to General Manager. I also became a partner in the operation. From there, our little corporation purchased KFJB/KXIA in Marshalltown, Iowa where I moved as Managing Partner. From there, it was off to Fargo-Moorhead to KVOX AM/FM as Managing Partner for four years. In 1993 I left radio for a couple of years and joined Holiday Travel. The radio bug never left, though, and in 1996 Colleen & I bought KDEC AM/FM in Decorah. We love the town, and owning a small-town station means I get the chance to do a bit of every job there is. Having family also involved at KDEC makes the situation perfect.

Since 1966, I’ve been involved with broadcasting, and plan on expiring while reading services notices on KDEC.

Meanwhile I reflect on the most interesting and fun career I could have stumbled upon, being a DJ, promoting Country shows in Eau Claire and Fargo(my favorite was bringing Brooks & Dunn to Fargo), Oldies shows in Marshalltown, and even Big Band shows (Count Basie, Glenn Miller Band, Tommy Dorsey, etc,) in Eau Claire and Fargo.
